Welcome to my website.

I live in the Blue Mountains near Sydney surrounded by bush.

This website is a retrospective of my work curated by myself. It is a realm of art, imagination and magic that I invite you to explore

I have been making art for many years using a variety of media.

Now I paint in oil. I make some of my own paint by grinding the pigment into linseed oil with a heavy bell-shaped lump of Venetian glass called a mueller.

My latest exhibition of oil paintings ‘Is there still life?’ appears in front of a selection of other oil paintings, just click on the tab above to see it.

Also to be found on this site are drawings, linocuts, paintings in acrylic and gouache, paintings on silk, wearable art and maps. I created some of my assignments as maps when I was at university.

My influences have been many. Dutch still-life paintings with their superb compositions, reference to the fleetingness of time and sense of the sublime.

Kandinsky inspires me with his theories of colour and composition and his glorious paintings.

I have a great interest in Natural history especially sea creatures and microscopic forms such as algae and I often juxtapose these with my own inventions. Creatures that should exist even if they don’t.

How can I be categorised, if you find that necessary – A Surrealist – perhaps –
Tapping into my imagination, my dreams, subconscious and myths, I aim to create works of deep mystery that cannot be entirely predicted in advance.

Perhaps this is why my work has often been described as ‘surrealism’ a movement that was heavily influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud who said;

Art is a dream – taken as a detour on the road to reality

Freud

I think art should be about something; an idea, a philosophy, a dream it is always an extension of the person who made it.
